The Dolphins River is known as an indicator species for the ecosystem and dolphins are considered the mascot of a healthy aquatic environment. Platanista gangetica has a long pointed snout and teeth appear in the upper and lower jaws. The eyes of the National Aquatic Animal lack a lens and therefore the National Aquatic Animal only acts as a means of finding the direction of light.

Dolphins tend to move with a fine in the substrate while roaming with the beak of the National Aquatic Animal to catch shrimp and fish. The body of the National Aquatic Animal is very thick and has light brown skin. The National Aquatic Animal is often pink in color.

The fins of dolphins are large and the dorsal fin is triangular and undeveloped. The National Aquatic Animal has a forehead that blinks and the National Aquatic Animal has very small eyes. These river dolphins are solitary creatures and the female is larger than the male. They are locally known as susu and make noises when breathing.

National Aquatic Animal inhabits parts of the Ganges, Meghna and Brahmaputra rivers in India, Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh, and parts of the Karnaphuli River in Bangladesh.

The National Aquatic Animal is considered to be one of the most endangered species in India and hence the National Aquatic Animal has been included in Schedule I of the Wildlife Act, 1972. A mud form is barrage that creates a physical barrier for the National Aquatic Animal species.

According to the WWF-India River Basins and Water Policy Team, the National Aquatic Animal is involved in a community-centered and multi-disciplinary approach to dolphin conservation.

In 1982, the population of the National Aquatic Animal in the Ganges was estimated to be between 5,000 and 6,000. But by 2010 the number of National Aquatic Animals had dwindled to less than 2,000.

National Aquatic Animal is Decreasing water resources, diversion and abstraction of water, haphazard fishing and increasing urban, industrial and agricultural water pollution. The construction of barrages also causes physical barriers for National Aquatic Animal migratory species.
