Influential Actors Gustaf Gründgens Biography

Gustaf Gründgens was born on 22 December 1899 in Düsseldorf, German Empire. He died on 7 October 1963 in Manila, Philippines. He attended a drama school in Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus after World War I. Gustaf Gründgens began his career in small theaters in Halberstadt, Kiel, and Berlin.

Gustaf Gründgens joined Kammerspiele in Hamburg in 1923, and Gustaf Gründgens appeared for the first time as a director, collaborating with Thomas Mann's son Klaus Mann and his sister Erika. Gustaf Gründgens married Erica Mann in 1926 and they divorced three years later.

In 1928 Gustaf Gründgens returned to Berlin to join the famous Deutsches Theater under director Max Reinhardt. Apart from the spoken theater, Gustaf Gründgens also worked with Otto Klemperer as a cabaret artist and screen actor in Kroll Opera. Especially Fritz Lang's 1931 film M, which greatly increased Gustaf Gründgens' popularity. Gustaf Gründgens has been a member of the Prussian State Theater ensemble since 1932.

In 1934, Gustaf Gründgens became the Intendant of Prussian State Theater. Gustaf Gründgens was appointed by the Prussian Minister-President Hermann Göring as a member of the Prussian State Council. In 1941 he also starred in the congratulatory film Ohm Krüger and his production Friedemann Bach. Gustaf Gründgens volunteered for Wehrmacht after Goebbels' total war speech on 18 February 1943.

From 1936 to 1946, Gustaf Gründgens was married to the famous German actress Marianne Hoppe. It is widely known as gay. He said the film was a commercial and decisive success. Gustaf Gründgens won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1981.
