Today we are going to talk about a jet named Fokker 100. This aircraft is known as a medium-sized, twin-turbofan jet airliner. The Fokker 100 was created by the company before its bankruptcy in 1996. The Fokker 100 is known to be the largest aircraft of its kind. The Fokker 100 has lower operational costs and was initially a short competition in the short-range of 100-seats. The Fokker 100 has contributed to strong sales since its introduction in the late 1980s. So let's gather a little more information about Fokker 100.
This aircraft is manufactured by Fokker. The first flight of the Fokker 100 took off on November 30, 1986. This aircraft has been developed by Fokker F28 Fellowship. The Fokker 100 also faced financial difficulties in 1990 and was acquired by Deutsche Aerospace AG. This type of aircraft was discontinued in 1997 after 283 airframes were delivered.
In July 2019, a total of 101 aircraft of this type were in service with 19 airlines of the world. Airlines have been retiring aircraft since the 2000s, but the Fokker 100 operates in large numbers in Australia and a small number in Iran and many other countries.
This type of aircraft is based on the Fokker F28 Mk 4000. This type of aircraft has two Rolls-Royce RB.183 Tay high by-pass ratio turbofans and a fuselage stretched by 18.83 ft. The wing of the Fokker 100 is 9.8 ft wide, and has new flaps and larger ailerons. The Fokker 100 has more wings. The landing gear of the Fokker 100 is strong and has new wheels and brakes and is horizontally widened by the stabilizer 4.6.
The Fokker 100 has increased passenger capacity from 85 to 109. This type of aircraft, like the Douglas DC-9 family, retained the Fokker Fellowship's twin rear fuselage-mounted engines and T-tail configuration. The Fokker 100 lacks F28 eyebrow windows above the cockpit.
On March 25, 1983, a certificate of sort was applied to the Fokker 100. The Fokker 100 program was announced in 1983 and its prototypes were paired. The Fokker 100 was first flown by PH-MKH on November 30, 1986, and the second by PH-MKC on February 25, 1987.
The Fokker 100's main customers include TAM Transportes Aéreos Regionais with 50, American Airlines with 75 orders and USAir with 40 orders. The Fokker 100's aircraft is powered by the more powerful Tay 650-15. In 1993, DASA purchased 40% of the Fokker 100 aircraft. And by 1995, Fokker and DASA were both facing financial difficulties that led DASA to abandon the regional type of aircraft market.
In June 1996, DASA sold most of the Fokker 100 Dornier to Fairchild Aircraft, which led to the creation of the Fairchild Dornier and the emergence of the Fairchild Dornier as the third largest regional aircraft manufacturer. The Fokker 100 has been a successful aircraft ever since. The Fokker 100 accumulated losses over the years and contributed to its collapse in 1996. Production of this type of aircraft was ceased in early 1997.
It was announced in 1999 that the Amsterdam-based group Rekkof Restart had negotiated with Fokker 100 with the intention of reopening both lines. The Netherlands aircraft company was then founded in the 2000s with the aim of resuming production of the Fokker 100.
In March 2010, NG Aircraft stated that it had received funding from the Ministry of Economic Affairs to adapt the existing D-type aircraft to serve as a prototype of a planned new build series. In the same month, the company announced interest in the Fokker 100 Converted to the proposed new build equivalent standard. It was also announced in March 2011 that the Brazilian government had formed a partnership to revive this type of aircraft.
In July 2014, Maarten Van Eeghen, chief executive of NG Aircraft, unveiled more details about the ongoing revival and production of a new generation of Fokker 100 aircraft. The F120 NG is dubbed and that type of aircraft will be a newly built aircraft and can seat a maximum of 125 to 130 passengers. That type of aircraft will essentially be an expanded model of the Base Fokker 100. The new Fokker 100 is rated at 17,600 lb thrust and is claimed to have produced 50 percent less fuel per seat than the new generation airliner's original Fokker 100.
